Riverside vs Descript for Podcasts: You're Comparing Different Bottlenecks

The question sounds like "which is better," but the real question is which half of your podcast is broken — the recording or the editing? Riverside fixes the first. Descript fixes the second. Buy wrong and you've paid to solve a problem you don't have.

Riverside's job: the recording

Riverside records every participant locally — their audio and video never actually travel through the shaky live call; the call is just for talking, the local files are the product. Result: internet hiccups don't wreck your recording the way they do in Zoom. Separate tracks per guest, up to 4K video, progressive uploading so the recording survives even if someone's laptop dies mid-session. For remote interviews, it's the recording-quality answer.

Descript's job: everything after

Descript transcribes the session and lets you edit the text to edit the audio/video — delete an "um" from the transcript and it's gone from the timeline. For podcasters this is a genuine 2–3× editing speedup: cutting a 90-minute interview to 55 minutes becomes a text pass, not a waveform hunt. Studio Sound rescues bad room audio with one click. Multi-track editing is where it lives daily.

The honest overlap (and where each is weak)

Riverside has editing now, and Descript has recording (Rooms). Both middling at the other's specialty: community consensus is consistently "Riverside to record, Descript to edit" — and our hands-on experience with Descript's editing matches that reputation. Riverside's editor is serviceable for cuts, not for pace.

The verdict

Remote show, guests on bad wifi → Riverside first, no debate. Editing eats your week → Descript first. Most working podcasters we read end up with both — Riverside records, Descript cuts. If budget allows one: follow the pain. Related: Opus Clip vs Descript for the shorts side of podcasting.
