Is Opus Clip Worth It? The Honest Math
Short answer: it's worth $15/month if you publish shorts from long videos regularly — and a waste of money if you don't. That sounds obvious, but the honest math below draws the line more precisely than most reviews bother to.
The math that matters: cost per usable short
Forget feature lists. The only number that decides this is what one publishable short actually costs you. Feed Opus Clip a 40-minute video and you get roughly 6–10 candidate clips. After culling the duds (there are always duds), you keep the best 2–4. That's the realistic ratio, and anyone promising 10-for-10 is selling something.
$15/month ÷ ~10 usable shorts = ~$1.50 per published short
...assuming one long video per week. Manual clipping at even a conservative 30 minutes per short means Opus saves you ~5 hours a month at Creator tier. If your time is worth anything at all, it pays for itself.
When it is NOT worth it
You upload less than twice a month. You need surgical edits (Opus is a first-draft machine, not an editor — see our Opus vs Descript breakdown). Or you publish zero shorts: a clips tool for a non-shorts channel is a gym membership you don't use.
The free plan limits (the part nobody puts in the headline)
The free tier exists but hobbles the core loop: limited upload minutes per month and no watermark-free exports (as of October 2026 — check their pricing page, they adjust limits often). It's fine for a two-week test on one video. It is not a production tool. The paid tiers remove the ceiling and unlock the longer videos where auto-clipping actually saves the most time.
The verdict
Worth it if: you make long videos and want a shorts pipeline without hiring an editor. Start one tier up from whatever you think you need; downgrade is easy. Skip it if: your editing bottleneck is precision, not volume — that's Descript's job, not Opus's.
